Congratulations is the second full length studio album released by psychedelic rock band MGMT. The album, released through Columbia Records, is a departure from the synth-heavy sound on their first record Oracular Spectacular. The departure from their past sound alienated some fans, but Congratulations is a more experimental, ambitious, and psychedelic work, spanning across multiple genres. The album is heavily influenced by the massive success the band saw after their first record. In an interview with NME, lead singer Andrew VanWyngarden said Congratulations is
“us trying to deal with all the craziness that’s been going on since our last album took off. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel natural”.
The record was received to moderate critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. “Flash Delirium”, “Siberian Breaks”, “It’s Working” and “Congratulations” were released as singles for the record, with only the former released before the album. In another interview with NME, MGMT member Ben Goldwasser explained why the band refrained from releasing singles to promote the album, saying

If you're coming to the second MGMT album because you loved 'Time to Pretend' , 'Kids', and 'Electric Feel', there's the door. No such.
No such moments exist on Congratulations. Hell, there aren't even failed attempts at replicating those songs here. The problem is that many of the half-million or so people who bought their debut, Oracular Spectacularjust want a couple catchy-as-fuck, ear-candy singles to blast in their cars or put on with their friends.

But the simplest answer seems most realistic: MGMT are being themselves. With a major-label contract in hand, they've never again written anything so radio-friendly. Instead, they penned the headier and exploratory and weaker parts mgmt congratulations album their debut album with help from go-to bells-and-whistles guy Dave Fridmann. Pastoral English pop, flighty mysticism, and studio-rat arrangements aren't the exception with this band, they're the rule. Every track here has successful passages, but frustratingly, they too often turn out to be detours or trap doors. The most satisfying songs are the ballads-- the title track in particular, but also 'I Found a Whistle'-- or the ones like mgmt congratulations album Working' and 'Someone's Missing' that walk a fairly linear path.

But that they didn't hang themselves here, given the circumstances, suggests a certain amount of talent. Whether they write club-friendly songs like 'Kids' or tracks like 'Congratulations' or 'Flash Delirium' or 'It's Working', they can write songs.
