Preserving memories made in the digital age is easy and inexpensive. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about that pile of slides and negatives from your 1984 Halloween party. Brookstone's iConvert Slide and Negative Scanner is, at least until the economy improves, a welcome alternative to paying professionals to do the work for you. The process is relatively simple. Plug the scanner into your computer's USB port, hit Scan and the iConvert will use its five-megapixel sensor and 3,600 dots per inch, or dpi, enhancement to save the images directly to your desktop. The digital converter works with both Windows XP and Vista and comes with its own photo-editing software (though harder-core photo enthusiasts might be better off using Adobe PhotoShop or a similar program). Patience is definitely a virtue when using the scanner because the holder only accommodates three slides at a time, though additional slide trays can be purchased from Brookstone's Web site. The iConvert Slide and Negative Scanner is priced at $130. Those Halloween party pictures are, of course, priceless.

Amex is a small company specialized in home media devices, including larger Blu-Ray players, for Asian markets. Most of its products, including the Multi-Drive, should be available online and in stores next month. Blu-Ray may not have a terribly long future (HD downloads are increasingly available), so spending less, not more, on a Blu-Ray burner is clearly the smarter choice.

I have called Brookstone and of course because I took too long in trying different computers etc there is no way I can get a replacement and there are no upgrades available.
